Homelessness

These resources have been collated to support Mr. Wilson's English 12 class research on homelessness and factors are associated with it. A resource list has been created with print and video resources that are available from our library and some from other libraries in the district. The resource list is available on the library catalogue, and is called Homelessness & Related Issues. Note, The first few search terms used to generate this list included holdings from the other secondary schools in the district. Some relevant titles may need to be requested in an inter-library loan, and others may not appear. You are encouraged to search the secondary schools for any specific term. Log in to Destiny, the library catalogue using firstlegalname.lastlegalname and your gedu/student email password.

Suggested search terms include: Homeless, homelessness, vagrancy, addiction, mental illness, psychosis, drug induced psychosis, poverty, marginalization, charity, paternalism, safe house, shelter, social housing, antisocial, panhandling, begging, trauma, physical abuse, sexual abuse, PTSD, veteran, Gabor Maté, safe injection site, overdose, opioids, Fentanyl, heroin, crack, cocaine, methamphetamine, meth, jib, rock, withdrawal, cold turkey, prostitution, sex trade, sex trade workers, human trafficking, child prostitution, harm reduction, recidivism, incarceration

You are encouraged to search the following databases:

Curio.ca - There are some excellent resources here. Video, audio, and print. Search for "homeless" and you will find many resources. To access everything, you may need to create an account. Consider publication dates when you are selecting resources.

NFB - the Natonal Film Board of Canada. See Miss Rimmer for help creating an account. There are several films that come up when the search term "homeless" is used. Of note is a series called "Here at Home." From the NFB description of the series, "Is it really possible to end chronic homelessness? Is "housing first" the answer? Can we afford it? Is it fair? With 50 films, data from the study and a dynamic blog, Here at Home is a window on a cutting-edge social experiment that could change your heart, your mind and your bottom line."

EBSCO - There are several databases within EBSCO. For this project, you are likely to find useful content in EBSCOhost (grades 9-adult), Consumer Health Complete, and Canadian Points of View.

GALE - Use the Power Search bar on the right hand side to search all of the available Gale databases. This is Miss Rimmer's search with the term homelessness.
